General Skincare FAQs for People with Color

What skincare ingredients are effective in treating hyperpigmentation for people of color?

Vitamin C: A potent antioxidant, helps brighten skin and reduce dark spots. Niacinamide: A form of vitamin B3, helps regulate melanin production, improves skin barrier function, and reduces redness. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) like glycolic acid and lactic acid: Gently exfoliate the skin, promoting cell turnover and helping to fade dark spots. Azelaic Acid: Helps reduce hyperpigmentation and is also effective for acne. Retinoids:(such as retinol, tretinoin) promote cell turnover and can fade dark spots, but use with caution, as they can sometimes exacerbate hyperpigmentation if overused or not paired with adequate sun protection. *Licorice Root Extract:A natural ingredient that can help brighten. Tranexamic Acid:A newer ingredient that can help with melasma and stubborn pigmentation. *Hydroquinone (prescription):A powerful bleaching agent, it should be used under the guidance of a dermatologist Kojic Acid:A natural ingredient derived from fungi, that helps to brighten.

 How can I prevent hyperpigmentation?

Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily, even on cloudy days. This is the single most important thing you can do to prevent and manage hyperpigmentation. Avoid Picking: Try not to pick or pop pimples, as this can trigger PIH. Gentle Skincare: Avoid harsh scrubs or abrasive treatments that can irritate and cause inflammation, which can lead to hyperpigmentation. Prompt Treatment: Treat any acne or skin inflammation promptly to reduce the chance of PIH.

What skincare products are beneficial for acne-prone skin in people of color?

Focus on gentle products that won't strip the skin: Salicylic Acid: A beta hydroxy acid (BHA) that helps unclog pores and exfoliate. Benzoyl Peroxide: An antimicrobial that fights acne-causing bacteria. Start with a low percentage to avoid irritation. Clay Masks: Can help absorb excess oil. Non-Comedogenic Moisturizers: Hydration is important even with acne-prone skin.

Do people of color need sunscreen?

Absolutely! While melanin provides some natural protection against the sun, it's not enough. Prolonged sun exposure can still lead to hyperpigmentation, premature aging, and skin cancer for everyone, regardless of skin tone.

Are there special considerations for dry skin in people of color?

Richer moisturizers with ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and shea butter can be particularly beneficial for dry skin. Avoid harsh cleansers or over-exfoliating, as these can worsen dryness.
